Our
Practice

The founders of Kaufmann & Gropman have over 40 years of experience enforcing the rights of employees. We have represented employees as part of class actions, multi-plaintiff cases, and as individuals in court cases on the trial and appellate level, as well in arbitration proceedings.

We have represented thousands of freight and shuttle drivers, food distributors, floor installers, and construction workers who have been misclassified as “independent contractors,” recovering wages and out-of-pocket expenses against large corporations like FedEx Ground, Flowers Foods, Snyder’s Lance, CEVA Logistics, and CSX Transportation. We have also represented sales managers, loan officers, and executive directors in claims for unpaid wages, commissions, bonuses, and severance packages against institutions like Bank of America, Citibank, and J.P. Morgan Chase.

We have repeatedly obtained sizable judgments, awards, and settlements for our clients against employers who violated a myriad of California and federal wage and hour laws. Our attorneys have also represented workers and worker-advocacy groups in several precedent-setting cases before federal and state appellate courts and the California Supreme Court. Those cases, which have advanced the rights of workers statewide and nationally, include Ali v. Daylight Transportation, LLC, 59 Cal.App.5th 462 (2020); Ayala v Antelope Valley Newspapers, Inc., 59 Cal. 4th 522 (2014); Samaniego v Empire Today, LLC, 205 Cal. App. 4th 1138 (2012); Kairy v SuperShuttle International, 660 F.3d 1146 (2011); and Narayan v EGL, Inc., 616 F.3d 895 (2010).

Through leadership roles in the California Employment Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association’s Federal Labor Standards Legislation committee, and at non-profits such as Legal Aid at Work, Kaufmann & Gropman attorneys have lectured and written extensively on the subjects of independent contractor misclassification and wage and hour enforcement actions.
